New Delhi, May 13: In the major development, the top govt panel, the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (NTAGI) has recently suggested a gap of at least 12-16 weeks between two doses of the anti-COVID vaccine Covishield. According to the NTAGI's recommendation, the person should take his second dose after 3 to 4 months from the first dosage.
The decision was taken after studying the data, available on the real-life based evidence, particularly from the UK. Currently, the interval between two doses of Covishield is four to eight weeks. This is the second time in three months that the Covishield dosage intervals have been changed.
It should be underlined that the govt panel has only recommended this time for only Covishield COVID-19, it has not were suggested for Covaxin. The gap between the 2 Covaxin shots will remain at the same at 4 to 6 weeks.
Apart from it, NTAGI has also recommended that those who have tested positive for COVID-19 and are waiting to take the vaccine should defer vaccination for six months after recovery. The experts have also suggested that people who have received plasma during their treatment should get vaccinated at least after 12 weeks.
The government panel also advised those with other serious illnesses and in ICU care to wait for four to eight weeks. NTAGI has also said that pregnant women can choose their vaccine and that lactating women will be eligible any time after delivery. Currently, neither group is eligible to get the shots.
The recommendations of the NTAGI will be sent to the National Expert Group on Vaccine Administration for COVID-19.
